Privacy Screen, 2024 shows someone recieving a bikini wax at a salon, a white and black spotted towel pulled up as a “privacy screen”. The close crop of the image draws us into this intimate yet anonymous scene. Tomlinson draws attention to the absurdity of the beautician attempting to preserve the recipients ‘modesty’ in such a vulnerable moment. The artist often reflects upon imposed societal beauty standards and the lengths that women often have to go to to maintain them. Her paintings call on us to question the motivations and power dynamics at play.
