Athena depicts the Greek goddess emerging from the mouth of her father Zeus. Perhaps in allusion to her friend Monica Sjoo’s famous painting of God Giving Birth (1968), this work unusually depicts a male figure in an act of childbirth. The goddess’ form closely resembles the surrounding mountains, suggesting a continuum of the female body with its environments and landscapes.
