Emerge (Quarantine) is a painting by Boo Saville in which she depicts a woman’s face revealing itself to the viewer, no longer masked by a PPE mask it is now covered by a translucent peel. The work delicately examines the relationship between self-care and societal pressure, questioning its rituals. Echoing historical beauty regimes, such as Queen Elizabeth I’s corrosive lead makeup, Saville draws a lineage between past and present demands placed on women to preserve youth at any cost.
