Verity Coward
9 7/8 x 11 3/4 x 1 3/8 in.
In this small painting, the geometrical elements drawn from the temporary papier-mâché models the artist creates, form a sort of swirl that seems to reference a sense of chaos or a portal into the world the artist has created.
Seriousness and playfulness coexist in an uncanny feeling of agency, a freedom from the rules and expectations that usually dictate the way we see the world. The absence of recognisable elements from our world gives the painting a sense of randomness and incomprehensibility, conveying the tragicomical illogicality of the human condition. Coward’s paintings embrace chaos, movement and lack fixed rules, creating a radical space for surprise and imagination.
