Harangled 3 is a large-scale oil painting on canvas in which Coward features a central element copied from a papier-mâché model, as she often does as part of her practice. Her creative process is remarkable: she first builds a sculptural composition that is entirely transient and does not appear in the final work. These elements briefly exist in the real world before being transferred into the realm of representation, losing their original concreteness and materiality to become increasingly abstract and distanced from reality. The inflatable sculptural works she includes in the exhibition loop the material generated in the painting back into the viewer’s reality, creating a short circuit between reality and representation.
