Untitled, 2017, is a small acrylic painting on linen. As our eyes take a moment to adjust to the inky darkness, the merest flecks of light paint trace the suggestion of two figures immersed in a romantic or perhaps sinister tryst in the black. This piece is part of her Mirror series, where Lancaster confronts the historical theme of the Vanitas, the Latin word for vanity, in the sense of emptiness or a worthless action and transience. In this series, Lancaster uncovers the grotesque and wistful portrayal of femininity. Portraying women in traditional stances derived from artistic history and established painting principles, Lancaster imbues them with a fresh significance, reclaiming these patriarchal motifs and the narrative of portraiture, presenting a redeemed perspective on the portrayal of women.
