Blending oil on canvas and welded steel, Seeker emerges as an amalgamation of sculpture and painting, pushing the boundaries of both mediums. Within this innovative fusion, a portrait of Ötzi, the ancient "Iceman," is nestled within a steel pedestal that partially veils its subject. Through this juxtaposition, Hughes intertwines the ancient with the contemporary, infusing the tangible act of preservation through mummification with profound significance. Imbued with a sense of enigma and questioning, this work challenges the very notion of plausibility and existence. Referencing human history, Hughes’ work comments on the changes of modern society and our fragile relationship with nature and tradition.
