Lips II by Maria Szakats depicts a flower - using mohair wool - based upon a found image of the "Hooker's Lips" plant. The artist responded to the unsettling yet compelling image, in part due to the juxtaposition of the plant's inviting, laughing mouth and its unsettling resemblance to the named "hooker." This interplay of duality and tension is a recurring theme in her work. Embroidering using a needlepoint technique, she deliberately keeps the scale small to incorporate a diverse range of colours and achieve a "high-resolution" effect. Once the embroidered image is finalised, Szakats brushes the surface to release the lengthy fibres characteristic of mohair, resulting in a blurred appearance. Despite utilising traditional techniques, Szakats’s creations often use AI-generated imagery - guided by her own instructions - as their starting point. Her work reminds us to contemplate the harmonious coexistence of modern and traditional elements and the evolution of art and its techniques. This depiction of plant life is part of her allegorical engagement with nature and its relationship with the human, reminiscent of the mediaeval tapestry tradition, offering a unique fusion of modern and traditional artistic expressions.
