Painted in 1990 at the end of a fruitful decade, Berg saw this work as her “farewell to the Mother Goddess”. The painting shows a powerful goddess figure rising from cloud or treetops, clasping a writhing snake in each hand. Making use of the complex symbol of the snake, the work slides fluidly between different goddess cultures, with the yellow semi-circle behind the woman’s head reading simultaneously as hair, headdress, and halo.
