Nona Inescu’s large-format framed photograph Protea explores the interrelationship between humans and the vegetal world, through the lens of a dried flower with a unique geometrical structure. In this photograph, a human hand mimics the form of the dried Protea flower, nesting itself into its intricate frame. The proximity of the hand, imitating the flower's shape, evokes both a union between the human and the nonhuman and it suggests a connection between organic decay and human presence. The lifeless and brittle flower is a reminder of the fragile balance of ecological relationships, and the human hand’s intrusion suggests human attempts to dominate nature.

This photograph reflects Inescu's ongoing engagement with posthumanist themes, emphasising the blurred boundaries between human and non-human realms. Suggesting the ways humans both mould and are moulded by the natural environment, it sparks a reflection on the ambiguity of this primal relation.
