In this mosaic piece made of glass and grout in a wooden frame, Marshall represents an eel in a convoluted cross shape, eating its tail. Adapting the ancient symbol of the ouroboros – recurring in a diverse array of ancient cultures worldwide – a circular symbol that depicts a snake devouring its tail, which has been used to represent the recurring natural cycle of death and rebirth. Like the other works in the exhibition Nostalgia for the Mud, Marshall refers to the primal desire to return to our roots, like the eel's journey through life phases in search of origin. The artist’s choice of using such an ancient medium reflects her interest in historical and traditional ways of representation and creates a continuum between the classical art forms and the modern ones.
