A goldfinch brought forth its namesake, transforming into an exquisitely fragile sculpture.

This piece is one of the characters of the speculative fabulation created by the installation Midnight Oil, in which it exists as an enigmatic juncture that merges past and future, between relic from a forsaken culture and futuristic biological experiment. Cradled in a nest, the goldfinch’s egg is a fragment of raw silica, a precious mineral that encapsulates the contradictions of extractive capitalism: environmental destruction provides us with the technology that leads our existences.

This jewel-like 3D-printed artwork, is shelled with 24K gold using the process of electroplating.

Seaward juxtaposes noble and archetypal metals with contemporary 3D printing techniques and synthetic materials. Embodying both fragility and worth, kept together by bolts and screws, this sculpture portrays a mechanised and idealised nature. The precious metal reveres the beauty of nature’s artistry.
